On Seeking Donations For A Worthy Cause From People You’ve Pissed Off
If the last time we communicated was, oh I’d guess, close to 10 years ago and you were at that time, (IMHO) a complete insensitive twat, then lo and behold! suddenly you recall my existence and include me on a group fundraising email, may I say this in all my networking-expertise glory: regardless of how worthy the cause (and how motivated you are to raise money for said worthy cause), a group email seeking donations neither engenders in the recipient the desire to RSVP and reconnect nor sparks in the core of their humanity network-building feelings of goodwill (you know, the feelings which lead to writing a check).
This happens to me all the time - not necessarily group emails, but fundraising messages from someone I have never heard of / never interacted with, with little personalization (basically a cut and paste job), simply because I write about women in film. Excellent post Kelly!
You get what you give.
